Established in 1990, Preparatory School Islamabad (PSI) is a privately owned, co-educational English medium school. Today it is proud of its reputation as one of the best schools in Pakistan.

PSI started off as an elementary and primary school, with a teaching staff of six only. Conscious of the importance of continuity in education and on the request of the parent body, the school started upgrading its classes from Class V upwards in 1996. O’ Level classes were introduced in August 2000 and the first batch of 12 students appeared for the Cambridge examinations in June 2002. More subjects were added as the number of students increased with each passing year. Since PSI believes in quality education, the number of students per class is kept restricted.

Today, there are more than 100 persons working for the 600 plus children studying at the school. What makes PSI different from the rest is the dedication and devotion with which its team works for the development of its students. Thus, the success can be attributed to an environment that provides an experience of academic excellence and the social development of a child. Learning is carried on in a caring, friendly and disciplined atmosphere, giving children the opportunity for optimum growth according to their particular gifts and talents. The ultimate objective is to turn out wholesome personalities with a sound academic base and an appreciation of our core values.

An interview with the student and family by the Vice Principal or Admission In-Charge is the first step. Current academic records and those from previous schools should be brought along.

The admission form will be given to the parents upon satisfactory performance in the test.

Academics

Elementary Level

The first year at school is a child’s most important year. To allow children to feel more secure and comfortable in the new environment, school hours are kept flexible for the first one or two weeks of the school year.

The elementary section of PSI offers a learning programme and an environment designed to meet the individual needs of children. The children develop in a caring and happy atmosphere based on the principles of love and mutual respect. The school enables children to see themselves as confident and capable learners. At the same time it views them as individuals who learn and develop at their own pace. Since children learn within the family as well as at school, close contact is maintained between teachers and parents.

Our Programme seeks to assess the growth of children in the following areas:

Emotional and social development

Intellectual development

Physical development

Artistic and sensorial development

Conduct and responsibility

Children are also made aware of traditional values and themes.

Each day begins with circle time. Activities include: talking about weather, show and tell sessions, news from home and introduction of new themes. Student’s birthdays and other special events are also acknowledged.

From circle time the children move to the work period in which learning sessions include simple language and basic number skills are taught. The rest of the morning is divided into story time; include indoor or outdoor play; singing or video time; Snack, snooze and tidying up time. Children also visit the computer lab twice a week to become familiar with the computer through games.

Field trips are arranged regularly to complement study themes. Places visited include markets, museums, parks, farms and the zoo. Trips are organized during school hours and approved school transportation is used. Parents are informed before each event.Primary Level

(CLASS I TO CLASS V)

Starting school is probably one of the most important experiences of a child’s life. Children are often both reluctant to leave their parents’ side as well as excited to explore and learn from their new environment. To allow the children to feel comfortable and secure, school hours are kept flexible for the first few weeks.

Our pre-school section is a wonderful environment for our youngest pupils, full of fun and stimulating early learning activities. We have a child centered approach to education, with a learning programme designed to meet the individual needs of children – we try our best to integrate modern teaching methods and materials with traditional cultural values.

The students develop in a caring and happy atmosphere based on the principles of love and mutual respect. Working from our children’s perception of the world, we try to inspire their curiosity, imagination and the beginning of independent thinking. The school enables children to see themselves as confident and capable learners. It provides an atmosphere where each child can achieve his/her own potential. Since children learn within the family as well as in school, close contact is maintained between teachers and parents.

PSI children have time to make friends, time to learn and time to grow. They are gently introduced to new routines and boundaries, and we adapt our teaching methods to their individual needs. Children are provided with excellent opportunities to help them make progress across all areas of learning. Our staff provides a totally child-centered learning environment in which children enter brimming with excitement. They are captivated and inspired by the extensive range of stimulating, imaginative and exciting learning opportunities on offer.

Lessons are theme related and planned to allow a child to explore all areas of the pre-school curriculum and prepare them for their future schooling. We nurture the joy of learning in a warm and colourful environment, providing a gradual introduction to more formal activities and increased self-reliance.

Snack time offers a variety of healthy, nutritious snacks, hygienically prepared in the school kitchen –– a time when students learn table manners, wait for their turn, as well as share and care.

Children learn about universal human values through hearing stories, value based activities and songs. Virtues such as honesty, compassion and humility are encouraged. Through love and discipline we build the foundations of true character and integrity.

Our programme seeks to assist the growth of children in the following areas:

Communication, Language and Literacy

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Mathematical Development

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Creative Development

Physical Development

Curricular and co-curricular activities enable students to develop responsibility and self confidence, effective communication skills, time management skills, study and the decision making skills essential for this age. Additionally celebrations, physical activities, formal and informal discussions take place as the opportunity arises. Secondary Level

CLASSES IX & X

Conscious of the importance of continuity in education, PSI decided in the year 2000 to upgrade the school to class IX and X to include β€˜O’ Levels. The course of studies follows the University of Cambridge syllabus and prepares the student to take the β€˜O’ Level Examinations in two years time. The two-year time frame may be extended by another year if a student is not able to meet academic standard for the examination.

A highly inter-active approach to learning is encouraged in the classroom through discussion and group work complemented by regular written class and home assignments. In Sciences, the learning process is supported by investigation; experiment demonstrations in each discipline in the Lab.More subjects may be offered depending on the demand and the size of the group opting for a subject. However, the choice of subjects will have to conform to combination set by the school.

In addition to learning facts, logical thinking is encouraged through inquiry and problem solving. Assessment is continuous and built in over the two year period.

Students are provided with an opportunity to help at in a primary classroom setting and encouraged to display their leadership qualities in school and community related activities.
